At Trilby Animal Hospital, we have years of experience providing Toledo residents with reliable veterinary care. This includes pet vaccinations. Having your pet vaccinated is an important part of being a responsible pet owner. Following are the answers to questions our veterinarian frequently receives regarding pet vaccinations.
Pet vaccinations safeguard your pet against highly contagious illnesses such as distemper, parvo, and rabies. We usually vaccinate pets every one to three years, dependent on the vaccine manufacturer’s guidelines.
Vaccinations are vital to protecting your pet’s health. By safeguarding pets from highly contagious and sometimes deadly diseases, a vaccination ensures your pet remains as healthy as they possibly can.
These are core vaccination series for dogs and cats respectively. All pets receive core vaccinations. The core vaccination series for dogs is DHPP, which protects against parainfluenza, parvovirus, hepatitis, and distemper. The core vaccination series for cats is known as FVRCP. This series of shots protect against feline viral calicivirus, panleukopenia, and rhinotracheitis.
While any medication carries some risk, there is a far greater likelihood that an unvaccinated pet will contract a preventable illness than undergo any adverse reaction to a vaccination. Vaccinated pets may experience mild symptoms of the illnesses they were vaccinated against, but this should subside after a couple of days.
While the state of Ohio does not require rabies vaccination, dog and cats kept within the city limits of Toledo must be immunized or re-immunized against rabies. It is recommended that puppies and kittens be vaccinated against rabies when they reach three months of age.
